Private Day Trip
Overview & Highlights
Step off the tourist trail and into one of Egypt’s greatest archaeological secrets on this private day trip to Tanis from Cairo. Located in Egypt’s northeastern Nile Delta, Tanis (ancient Djanet) was once one of Egypt’s most powerful cities — a sprawling royal necropolis that lay forgotten for centuries until French Egyptologist Pierre Montet stumbled upon its intact royal tombs in 1939, just two weeks before the outbreak of World War II.
Unlike most Egyptian archaeological discoveries, the timing of Montet’s find meant Tanis received little international attention — yet what he uncovered was extraordinary: the undisturbed royal tombs of Kings from the 21st and 22nd Dynasties, containing golden masks, silver coffins, and precious jewels that rival the riches of Tutankhamun. The site has been called “Egypt’s forgotten treasure”, and a visit here rewards those who seek beyond the Pyramids.
This is a private tour departing from your Cairo or Giza hotel. The distance is approximately 170 km (around 3 hours’ drive) through the fertile Nile Delta landscape, making it a long but deeply rewarding full day.

Trip of a lifetime
From the pyramids at Giza to the temples of Luxor, every day was perfectly organised. Our guide was knowledgeable, warm and made sure we never felt rushed. Highly recommend Egyptian Trips.
Seamless from start to finish
Booking was easy, the driver was always on time, and the hotels were excellent. The Nile cruise was the highlight of our holiday. We will be back for the desert tour next year.
Knowledgeable guides, no hidden costs
Everything was exactly as described. Our Egyptologist brought the history to life and the whole team was responsive on WhatsApp throughout the trip. Five stars well deserved.
Better than we imagined
A truly authentic experience. The food, the people and the sites all exceeded our expectations. Special thanks to the team for handling every detail so we could just enjoy Egypt.
Felt safe and looked after
As two women travelling alone we felt completely safe and cared for the entire time. The itinerary balanced sightseeing with rest perfectly. Cannot recommend them enough.
Outstanding value
